Burrgati is a Performance Company that express traditional and modern indigenous stories from the Garrang region on the Eastcoast of Australia through dance, rhythm and speak.

Burrgati offer cultural exchange through performance and workshops to private and school groups. It is an interactive and intimate experience in learning about local indigenous history and culture.

Ray Kelly Snr - Director

Ray Kelly Snr has dedicated his life and work to the enhancement of the Indigenous Community on regional, state and national levels. He is passionate about his community and the preservation of Indigenous culture.

As a former director of the ATSIA Unit of the Australia Council for the Arts and the CEO for Awabakal Newcastle Aboriginal Co-operative, Ray's dedication has made him an integral part of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community through health, housing, theatre and the performing arts.

Ray was a founding member fo the Awabakal Traditional Dance Group in 1980, and has evolved as a dancer, musician, storyteller, actor, playwright, director and artist.

Ray was the first Aboriginal playwright to have his play "Somewhere in the Darkness", produced by the Sydney Theatre Company and he has made numerous stage and film appearances. He has also received the Newcastle Playwright's Award and has had his work performed at the Adelaide Arts Festival.

In October 2006, Ray’s contribution to the arts was formally recognised with the award of an honorary doctorate of letters from the University of Newcastle.


Ray (Bud) Kelly Jnr

Bud’s father Ray Kelly Snr introduced him to dance at the young age of four when Bud became a member of the Awabakal dance group. This became the beginning of a life long passion for dance and performance.

Bud is a performer and an entertainer who has unique style of theatre and dance. He captivates his audience and takes them on an interactive and personal journey to his people and their connection to the land.

Apart from being an accomplished dancer but has also established himself as an underground Rap and Hip Hop artist , “free.b”. His social and political messages is one of power, humanity and inspiration.

Bud has had the honour of performing at the Sydney Opera House, throughout rural New South Wales and the Brisbane, Adelaide and West Australian Arts Festivals. He has also operated dance , hip hop and rap workshops throughout Australia & New Zealand.

In 2005 bud became the proud father of Burrgati Dance Companies youngest member, Aliah Jade Kelly.
